Understanding Price Movements in Point Spread Betting Markets: Evidence from NCAA Basketball
نویسندگان
چکیده
We analyze point spread changes and betting volume for NCAA Division IA men’s basketball games using survival analysis techniques. Estimates based on point spread changes from 2,548 games at the Hilton sports book and 1,681 games at the Mirage sports book in the 2007 season indicate that observed changes in point spreads are not related to imbalances in bet volumes. Sports books do not appear to change point spreads to induce equal volumes of bets on either side of propositions; the “balanced book” model of sports book behavior does not describe observed point spread changes in this market. EXPOSING CHEATING AND CORRUPTION Point Shaving: Corruption in NCAA Basketball
A new field of “forensic economics” has begun to emerge, applying price-theoretic models to uncover evidence of corruption in domains previously outside the purview of economists. By emphasizing the incentives that yield corruption, these approaches also provide insight into how to reduce such behavior. This paper contributes to this agenda, highlighting how the structure of gambling on college...
متن کاملPoint Shaving in the NBA: An Economic Analysis of the National Basketball Association’s Point Spread Betting Market
In this paper, I examine the point spread betting market of the National Basketball Association for indications of cheating through point shaving. Previous studies have illustrated the contradictory phenomenon of simple, profitable betting rules persisting in a market of informed traders. While normally dismissed due to the salaries earned by professional players, I propose point shaving as an ...

Abstract. A quantile regression variant of the classical paired comparison model of mean ratings is proposed. The model is estimated using data for the regular 200405 U.S. college basketball season, and evaluated based on predictive performance for the 2005 NCAA basketball tournament. Rather than basing predictions entirely on conditional mean estimates produced by classical least-squares paire...
متن کامل‘Quarbs’ and Efficiency in Spread Betting: can you beat the book?
In this paper, we examine a relatively novel form of gambling, index (or spread) betting, that mirrors (and indeed overlaps with) practices in conventional financial markets. In this form of betting, a number of bookmakers quote a bid-offer spread about the result of some future event, and bettors are invited to buy (sell) at the top (bottom) end of the quoted spreads. We hypothesise that the e...
